When you go to sleep at night, you want to feel secure that you are falling asleep in a safe space. You don’t want to have to constantly worry about whether or not you locked all four locks on your door and that your wooden window jam is securely in place.
However, how do you know if where you are moving to is safe or not? If you are moving to Georgia, then there are definitely some safe places and there are definitely some areas that are not as safe. Georgia is full of beautiful landscapes, gorgeous beaches, and historical towns. But it also has a few cities that have areas that may not be as beautiful at night. Those would be the most dangerous places in live in Georgia.
And that’s what we’ve done here — identify the most dangerous cities in Georgia for 2020 based on FBI data. Specifically, we looked at violent and property crimes per capita for the 94 cities over 5,000 people. The idea being that you want to know where crime occurs so that you can make an informed decision. However, we are not saying anything about the efficacy of local law enforcement and there are definitely safe areas in every city we talk about.
With all that in mind, Georgia as a whole is actually on the dangerous side of American states, ranking in the top third. So these cities contribute to an overall sense of danger in Georgia.

Located on the southside of Atlanta, East Point is a city you may want to avoid if you are new to Georgia. East Point, Union City, and College Park, the top three most dangerous cities in Atlanta, are all located just south of Atlanta.

The 10 Most Dangerous Places To Live In Georgia For 2020
East Point comes in 1st on our list for the most dangerous places in Georgia. Just southwest of Atlanta, the city beats its bigger neighbor when it comes to crime.
Residents of East Point have a 1 in 7.5 chance of being the victim of a crime. For reference, the most dangerous place in Virginia had about a 1 in 15 chance of being the victim of a crime.
East Point ranks as the 1st highest city for property crime per capita which contributes to its high chance of crime.
College Park, where crime happens in Georgia.
It’s important to remember that the FBI bases its crime data on where the crimes occurred and the police department for College Park covers parts of Clayton and Fulton County associated with the city and not just the city proper.
That being said, Ludacris, 2 Chainz, and Jung Joc all came from College Park and they don’t sing about rainbows and butterflies
The smallest place to make this list, Eastman ranks as the 3rd most dangerous city in Georgia.
There’s a 1 in 11.6 chance being robbed in 2018. Yikes.
Take a city like Eastman.. 20 years ago lots of people there carpooled to work at Robins AFB.. There was a shirt factory and the Lithonia Lighting Factory in Eastman employed people. Plus people did a lot of farming all over South GA. Lithonia has since closed its doors, folks were paid to plant pine trees instead of farming and probably most of the folks who worked at Robins are retired. It is sad to see the decline of so many cities in our state.
With .014 violent crimes per capita (or 140 per 10,000 people), only College park came in at a higher rate.
So while Americus is the county seat of Sumter County, it’s also the location where the most crimes occurred in the County.
Today, Hapeville is the 5th most dangerous city in the state.
Unlike other cities on the list, Hapeville has seen a recent boom in crime, with violent crime going up from 2017-2018, and property crime also going up.
Watch your wallet in Hapeville, because there’s a 1 in 9.0 chance of being the victim of a property crime while you’re there.
Albany ranks as the 6th most dangerous city in Georgia thanks to 3rd place finish in violent crime and a 20th place finish in property crime.
Those rankings contribute to a 1 in 16.1 of being the victim of a crime in Albany.
Ive lived in Albany for all of my life and Ive seen my fair share of crime but Albany Ga is the heartbeat of the south. Weve been through a total of 2 Tornadoes and 1 Hurricane and when it counts the most we stick together. There is so much love in Albany everyone is friendly. The city has a pure heart of gold.
Some of the favorite places to visit that I enjoy personally is Little Red Dog House which a local favorite hot dog stand. Another place to eat that is heavily enjoyed by locals is the Albany Fish Company where they served delicious seafood.
Like many port cities we have looked at, Brunswick ranks highly for the occurrence of crime. In particular, violent crime rates in Brunswick stick out for being the 5th worst in Georgia.
There were 175 violent crimes in Brunswick, but that’s down from 251 violent crimes in 2011.
A City Data user says, “I am 22-years-old and DO NOT recommend Brunswick for a single person looking to get out there and have fun and meet people.” Probably because going out there leads to crime.
Griffin is another county seat that also represents its county as one of the most dangerous cities in Georgia.
Griffin’s ranking for violent crime and property were 2nd and 25th, respectively.
Griffin is a bit off the beaten path about 50 miles south of Atlanta. Yet it still manages its fair share of crime.
Today, Dublin is the 9th most dangerous city in the state.
Unlike other cities on the list, Dublin has seen a recent boom in crime, with violent crime going up from 2017-2018, and property crime also going up.
Watch your wallet in Dublin, because there’s a 1 in 20.4 chance of being the victim of a property crime while you’re there.
Warner Robins ranks in the top 10th worst rates of violent and property crime in the state.
Residents of Warner Robins faced a 1 in 170 chance of being the victim of violence, a rate which steadily increased from 2017-2018.
Property crime did drop by a modest amount during this interval though.
I went there for a doctor’s appointment. To my amazement I have never seen so many different stores in such a short distance on one main road! A shopper’s dream!
Any store to shop for clothes and etc. you can think of from A-Z! Restaurants and fast food too!

How we determined the most dangerous cities in Georgia for 2020?
Every year the FBI release two crime datasets, a preliminary dataset limited to the biggest cities in the country, followed by a more detailed release at the end of the year.
For our analysis, we focused on the JUST released 2017 data, specifically the 2017 Crime In The United States Report. We will update the results when data becomes available in September 2019.
So what criteria did we use? Have a look:
- Violent Crimes Per Capita
- Property Crimes Per Capita
In order to make the analysis as apples to apples as possible, we only considered cities over 5,000 in population. That left us with 94 cities in Georgia.
We then ranked each city from 1 to 94 for the two criteria with a #1 ranking being the most dangerous for the particular criteria.
Next, we averaged the two rankings into one “Dangerous Index”.
Finally, we ranked every city on the “Dangerous Index” with the lowest index being the most dangerous in Georgia — East Point.
Read on for a detailed look at the 10 most dangerous cities in Georgia.
